Rancho Mirage is the middle of the valley and the quietest of it — big lots, old money, and the shortest drive to everywhere else.
They call it the Playground of the Presidents, and the reason is Thunderbird — the country club that hosted Eisenhower, Ford and a run of Hollywood names. Thunderbird Heights still sits above the valley floor on the largest lots in the city, and the architecture around it runs from Steve Chase interiors to low desert-modern houses with nothing behind them but mountain.
The houses here tend to be bigger than Palm Springs and further apart. Walled acre lots, tennis courts, guest casitas, and in one case the only private lazy river in the desert. It is where we put groups who want room and quiet rather than a walk to a bar.
Practically, it is the most convenient base in the valley. The El Paseo shops are ten minutes one way, Palm Springs twenty the other, and the Eisenhower medical campus and Agua Caliente casino are on the doorstep.

The largest sleeps 30 across 15 bedrooms — a private resort on its own grounds in the heart of the city.
7 of the 14 houses accept dogs, which is a higher proportion than most of the valley.
The Living Desert zoo and gardens, Sunnylands, the Agua Caliente casino, and El Paseo's shops and restaurants ten minutes away in Palm Desert. Several golf clubs are within a few minutes' drive.
Wow is all I have to say. Huge house, well maintained with all the applicances/etc needed for a stay. Having a tennis court was icing on the cake. We are already working with the team to book our next stay.
Everything was perfect. The house is spacious, clean and beautiful. Everyone from Desert luxury was responsive and very helpful. Would definitely rent this house and rent from them again.
We've stayed at many different Butterfly Midcentury homes, but none of this condition. This one was recently remodeled and impeccably clean. We appreciated how well appointed it was in terms of linens and kitchen supplies. Pool was perfectly heated. Perfectly clean. DLE staff is all incredibly professional and helpful. Perfect score!
